Compare the scope before comparing the price

Make sure each estimate covers the same plants and the same cleanup. A quote for the front hedge only cannot be compared directly with one covering the whole property and haul-away. Ask whether the work includes clearing clippings from nearby beds and hard surfaces.

A request for "yard cleanup" leaves room for different interpretations. Separate the list into trimming plants you want to keep, cutting unwanted growth, removing leaves, and mowing tall grass. That makes it easier to identify work that needs a separate assessment.

For example: "I need the bushes along the front walk trimmed, plus the hedge beside the driveway. Please include collecting and hauling away the clippings. There is a narrow gate on the side.
